A lion’s tongue has a rough substance that is perfect for removing dirt and bugs from the fur. They also rub against trees to remove anything that is on their body that they don’t want to. As lions are social animals and live in prides, it is common site to see them lick each other’s bodies in their leisure time. They groom each other and help in removing the dirt and parasites from their body and fur. This also strengthens the bonding between members of the pride. Grooming behavior is a way of showing affection and helps in increasing the chances of mating.
Generally, lionesses groom their cubs more often than they groom other lions. By doing this they can ensure that their cubs are healthy and clean. Studies show that males also groom each other when they want to show affection or most importantly when there is tension in the group.

Do Lions Smell Bad In Captivity?
The scent of a big cat varies depending on the environment it’s living in. For instance, lions in the wild have a musty, earthy smell whereas lions in captivity are more likely to have an ammonia-like body odor because they are not exposed to the same dirt and plants that they would be if they are out in the open wild.
This is the reason that lions in captivity that you see in zoo smell lesser than the ones in the wild.
How Does A Lion’s Breath Smell Like?
Lions do have bad breath as they are carnivores and eat the meat of other animals to survive. When they consume meat, the bacteria from the meat gets into their mouth and stomach. Later, this bacteria will produce an odor that smells like bad breath.
